Project 2: Channel Bumper

In this project, students will synthesize the knowledge gained from the previous project to create an abstract channel bumper. The aim is to demonstrate the ability to explore and generate a compelling and creative channel bumper with a good audio tempo and visually engaging video.

Requirements:
  • Concept Development:
  • Choose a proposed channel (existing or fictional).
  • Create a mood board that reflects the concept and style guide for the final look and feel.
Storyboard and Animatics:
  • Develop storyboards to visualize the sequence of the bumper.
  • Create animatics to plan out the motion and timing.

Process

For this project, I've chosen Identity V as my propose channel.

Identity v has a visual style that include Gothic, Victorian-inspired aesthetics with a dark, mysterious atmosphere. So I wanted to work on something with a similar vibe.

Technical Process

After having the ideas and storyboard as my guide on how the story goes, I move on to after effects and started working on it. I used pen tool to trace out the symbol as it plays an important role in IDV. With the symbol traced out, I wanted to make it look like a loading screen so I used mask to change its colour to act as a transition.

After the screen completely turned red, I took inspiration from the game itself when it uses glass creaking as their transition into the game so I used shatter effect to move onto the next scene.

Fig 4.1 Transition to next scene

The next scene was taken inspiration from a youtube video that shows how a ball transition into different rooms by going through the door which can be seen from my proposal slide. I used that idea and uses it as a hunter chasing someone through a door but after going through the door it switch to a survivor who is trying to escape.

Moving on I did a rotation on the scene to make another transition to a new scene which is a book I made by using rectangular shapes and turning them into 3D.

I then use masking to put the pages of information and diary of the game and survivors which is a huge part of the story plot in the actual game.

Then I zoom into the book revealing the channel bumper.
