Lecture

Week 1: Culture, Design and Research

  • Culture and design comes together and it is necessary to understand and express both of these to show development in creative skills for anyone that are working in design field.
  • Nowadays designers are facing challenges in expressing their creativity. Therefore designers have to be more vigilant with their artworks, which takes more than just skills, intuition and creativity. It also require research.
Research / Work Progress
  • Making sure to have additional information, including important information.
  • Present concepts with clear intention and meaning into projects to improve the message that you're trying to deliver.
  • Assist in locating the social, cultural, and political context in which design components are used.
  • Be aware of the importance of graphics in terms of its genesis history, sociology, philosophy, and cultural studies.
  • Before writing the project proposal, research should be done. As well as after producing the proposal, and during the creation of the artwork.
Why is research important?
  • By doing research, we can gather data that are needed and process them into crucial information that can be use on projects and convey the messages properly, ensuring that the design have clear and correct meaning to it.
  • Research play an important role in uniting theory and ensuring the accuracy of the project's rationale.

Week 2: Visual Culture

  • Arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded
  • Ideas, customs and social behaviors of a particular society
  • Could culture also involve certain disciplines or crafts?
What is Heraldry?
The system by which coats of arms and other armorial bearings are used to identify who we are. Heraldry has many rules in place. There are five principle colours known as tinctures:
  • Red, blue, green, black and purple.
  • There are two metals used ( gold and silver ).
The use of colour and metal is governed by the Rule of Tincture, which says to never put colour on colour or metal on metal.

Nowadays majority of public and private school in Malaysia uses emblems that are based on heraldic designs. It has become the visual form associated with education institutions. There were some changes that were made but the vast majority of schools still retain elements adapted from the heraldic system.

The basic components of heraldry
  • Shield
  • Motto
  • Mantle
  • Helmet
  • Supporters
The shield is decorated using charges, which can be simple geometric shapes known as ordinaries, or an animal form, or other symbols such plants, objects, buildings, etc. All together, they are referred to as a coat of arms, and the formal written description is called a blazon.

Proposal

Fig 1.1 Ideas from each group member for culture and topic

After some discussion and voting, we decided to go for Day of the Dead as that was a topic that caught our interest and the culture stands out to us due to its unique ways to face death in a positive attitude.

Fig 1.2 Day of The Dead poster

With the topic decided, we went on with the further research on the history, origins and everything we need to know about the culture. When all that's been done we starts to brainstorm for ideas.

In order for us to understand the day of the dead more easily, my groupmates and I also watch movies such as Coco by Disney and The Book of Life by 20th Century Studios.

Fig 1.3 Posters of Coco and The Book of Life

The reason why we chose these movies are because it was based on the Day of the Dead and it was full of elements used during the celebration which helped inspire us on our work which will be shown afterwards.

According to our observation, we saw common elements used in the movie which caught our attention so we went on with some research to find out what is the meaning of it and why it was used.

After doing some research, we came out with 3 main elements that will be use for our work.

From the slides shown above, we came out with 3 ideas which are based on the elements used during the celebration.

1. Sugar Skull Design
  • Create a skull or a mask and turn it into different colours according to 4 different elements for example, the wind is blue, earth is green. When the light changes, the skull will reveal a different design which tells different story about the past of the dead. Different skulls have different patterns and designs which are influenced by the interference of other cultures
2. Marigold flower
  • Create a 3D mural which changes based on the colour used to see through the artwork. We will be using blue and red to draw both the living and the dead with the same background to create a 3D effect.
  • The blue will be for the living where people are waiting on the bridge for their loved ones that passed to come back to visit while the red are for the dead who are standing by the blue living people's side.
  • Based on which side of the red and blue 3D glasses that people are looking through, they will be witnessing different artwork.
3. Alter
  • Mexicans believe placing the photograph of someone deceased on the altars will help the spirits find the right altar where they can find their family waiting for them.
  • Therefore, both photography and spirits became an inspiration to create an Instagram filter. It is believed that when people passed away, their soul will leave the body and their ghost form will be covered in design which symbolizes the cycle of life showing their past lives' event.
  • Therefore, creating an Instagram filter with face skull painting to show people what they might look like in the ghost form can peak their interest and let them see if the filter was accurate or not.

Project 2: Data Collection

Based on the feedback we received after our project proposal presentation in Week 4, we went on and did some more research about cultures which share similarity with Day of the Dead. We compiled the research into a google doc.

Fig 2.1 After Proposal Ideas & Research

In the end, we decided to go with Day of the Dead x Chinese ghost festival

Research Question:
  • Is there any common ground between Chinese ghost festival and day of the dead?
  • What are the similarities and differences of both cultures?

Problem Statement:
  • Day of the Dead and Chinese ghost festival are two types of festivals that are similar in terms of how they are festivals for the dead. However, both Chinese culture and Mexican culture look at death in a different ways. Day of the dead is a celebration of death whereas Chinese ghost festival is a fearful and sorrowful month in Chinese culture. In Chinese culture and Mexican culture, death is not viewed as the end of a journey. This is due to the fact that both cultures believe on how souls would come back to the living realms.
Research Objectives:
  • To find common ground between both Day of the Dead and Chinese ghost festival.
  • To get a in depth on Chinese and Mexican culture opinions on death.
To correlate the research objectives and the research questions, we conducted some interviews and surveys to get different perspectives and views on both cultures.

These are the conclusion notes that we sum up from the interview.

Final Project

After we are done with our restated proposal, we finalized the elements and our final design for the project. We delegated different tasks to different team members 3 are doing the research for each elements that we can put into the design while the other 3 work on the design.

After some discussion and voting among ourselves, all of us can agreed upon design #1 since it have the most interesting design and angle.

Fig 3.4 Research on elements used

With the elements and draft design all prepared, we started out with the based of the design by doing the line art and proper placement.
Fig 3.5 Drawing process of final project

When the drawing is done, we imported it into Photoshop to add in any necessary details and colours. We worked on adding in some more layers needed so that it can be used for the animated gif.

The design is finished and all that is left to do is animate it. We imported the final design into After effects and animate it.

Finally, the animation is done. We put it into the template that we prepared beforehand and we are finished with the A1 poster.

Feedbacks

Week 4
  • Consider adding more input from the aspect of why Day of the Dead is celebrated rather than being feared for the basic assumptions of your topic.

Week 5
  • Consider looking at another different culture of the afterlife that has similar aspects to Day of the Dead and compare the two of them. Consider the final outcome to have a collaboration of 2 cultures on the afterlife.

Reflection

This module was quite interesting, considering the amount of freedom we got. We could pick any topic we want, and although that freedom is nice but at the same time stressful since it will be harder to choose what topic to work on. I'm the type of person that's more comfortable in working when I am simply being told what to do but this is not entirely a good thing so I tried to come out with multiple ideas when we were in the deciding stage on which topic to go with in order to extend my creativity. Thinking from the bright side, the freedom we were given is to help us develop as a designer, and to help us learn to trust our decision-making on what we want to work on.

Overall, I enjoyed the process of working on this project as well as getting to know my teammates better.
