Cultural Prosperity · Celebration
Renewal of life · Return

Idea:
For my triptych, I wanted to use the theme for renewal of life so I thought about time change. I came out with an idea for a bird view angle drawing and I wanted it to be above a river. Since the scenery will be on the river I came out with more details and idea. My idea for it was to have a person row across the river while season changes. For Spring, my idea was to have lotus flower blooming and for this panel I wanted it to have the brightest shade compared to the other 2. For Autumn , I wanted to let this panel have a darker shade to show the changes in temperature and the lily pads will have brown and yellowish color due to changes in the length of daylight. For Winter, the boat did not past through on this panel due to the frozen river. Lily pads on the river also freezes and have fallen snow on it. For this panel I planned to make this panel light to show the coldness.
Sketch Figure

Lecturer feedbacks:
After showing my sketch and propose my idea for my triptych, I was given some advice from Miss Anis which are
  • Let the lily pads pass through the panels without cutting it off
  • Give the person on boat thicker clothes on the Autumn panel to show the coolness of the season.
  • Add lantern on the boat as a detail.
  • Add some snowman on the Winter panel to make it less empty.

Progress
Firstly, I divided the canvas into 3 panel so that I would know which and where each panel goes. I added lily pads using eclipse tool to draw circle around. I also use pen tool to trace the shape of boat according to my sketch.

After that I erased triangular parts on the circle to create the shape of the lily pads.

After the lily pads are done, I added in shadow by using black and white gradient to add in texture for the shapes. As for the Autumn's lily pad I used yellow and orang gradient to make the lily pads have withering effect.

I also added in flower by using the method that I've learnt on week 4 by using the shape builder tools. I made a square and turn it into flower petal shape then use rotation tool to make it into lotus flower.

After all of the lotus flower and lily pads are done on the spring panel. I added some wave effect to show movement of the boat. I also added in some stems for some of the lily pads.

At the separating point from Spring to Autumn, I made the flower return to lotus form as it does not bloom during that time.

For winter, the lily pads are all frozen and to create that effect I added white colored shapes on the lily pads and turn down the opacity so that the color of the lily pads would still show a little. To create snow effect on the lily pads, I used white stripes and add in gaussian blur effect to make it look light and white just like real snow.

Since all the lily pads are finished, I moved on to the boat and the person in it. I made the person wear two different clothes to show the changes in temperature throughout the two seasons.

I also added in lantern to show the temperatures drop and shorter day time so the person can use it as a source of light and heat.

The last detail I had for the panels was the snowmen on the frozen river. Since the river is frozen, people can walk through the river and have fun on it. So adding snowmen can show the happy and fun atmosphere for the season of Christmas.

Final Triptych

Reflection
I am satisfied with the final result of my triptych. I had some struggling with it at first because I was not sure what tool is the most convenient and what is the correct way to make the shapes and color better. But I managed to figure it out after hours of research and experimenting it myself on AI. There was a few times where my AI turn blank and I loses my progress but there wasn't much I could do about it
other than pray that the program would not crash and lose my progress. I still did not came out with a solution for that but fortunately I was still able to finish it as I constantly save my progress so that it would not be gone when AI malfunction. Finally, I find this task both fun and stressful but I enjoyed learning and improving.
